Latvia Residence by Investment Program
Latvia is one of the European Union countries considered by investors seeking a residence-by-investment option through a relatively low-capital business investment.
However, the investment amount alone is not sufficient. The size of the Latvian company, its number of employees, turnover or balance sheet value, and its tax contribution are all important factors in determining eligibility.
Corporate Investment Options
A minimum capital investment of €50,000 may be made in a qualifying larger Latvian company that meets the program's requirements.
For smaller companies, the minimum investment threshold may increase to €100,000. In addition, the number of investors permitted per company and the nature of the company's economic activities may be subject to specific regulatory limitations.
Nature of the Residence Permit
This route provides a temporary residence permit.
To maintain the residence permit, investors may need to ensure:
- The investment is maintained;
- The company continues its business operations;
- Tax and economic contribution requirements continue to be met; and
- Residence documentation for both the investor and accompanying family members is renewed when required.
Family Eligibility
A spouse and eligible dependent children may be included in the application.
Each family member may be required to provide additional supporting documentation, maintain valid health insurance, and demonstrate sufficient financial means.
Key Advantages
- Residence in a European Union member state;
- A relatively low initial investment requirement;
- The opportunity to establish or invest in a business;
- Short-term travel throughout the Schengen Area; and
- The possibility of including eligible family members.
Key Risks
Potential risks may include:
- Investing in companies that exist only on paper without genuine commercial activity;
- The company no longer meeting employee, turnover, or other program requirements;
- Insufficient protection of the investor's shareholder rights;
- Unexpected tax liabilities and operating costs; and
- Assuming that residence permit renewals will be granted automatically.
